Congratulations Stacey Figueroa on Winning the Mark Sanchez Award
|
Mark Sanchez was a firefighter with the Flagstaff Fire Department and participated in many programs directed toward Childhood Injury Prevention. His Educational Character, Father Fire, was well known and loved in the community he served. Mark was tragically taken from us on September 11, 1993 in a traffic collision. The Mark A. Sanchez Award is presented by his parents, who are heavily involved with Coconino County SAFE Kids Coalition and Arizona Fire and Burn Educators Assoc. (AFBEA), annually at the AFBEA Characterization Conference in Bullhead City Arizona. The award is presented to an individual who has displayed dedication in promoting fire and life safety in their community or state through the use of characterization.
Congratulations to this year's recipient, Stacy Figueroa! Stacy has been with the Pine-Strawberry Fire District for 16 years and is currently an Engineer/EMT. When Stacy first started with the Department she began helping the fire marshal, going to elementary schools and doing “Uniform” programs as the bunkered firefighter.
She wanted to learn more and started looking for a better way to teach fire safety. She attended the AFBEA Characterization Conference for the first time 14 years ago. The experience further fueled her passion for providing safety education for her community. She returned home, immediately recruiting her brother, they have been preparing and presenting programs every since, in her community and several surrounding communities and counties, as well.
Stacy is a highly motivated individual and has many roles with in her department; she is the department
PIO, started and designed the department Line of Duty Death program and is in charge of the Juvenile Fire Setter’s Intervention program. She installs smoke alarms and guardian angels on her off duty days as well as home “Fall Prevention” inspections. Stacy is a nationally recognized instructor at AFBEA Characterizations and Life Safety conferences, Fire Prevention Classes at Texas A&M Fire School and at the Texas Life and Fire Safety (LAFS) conference. She serves as a member on the Arizona Fire and Burn Educators board and on the Natl. Life and Fire Safety Board.
She is currently setting up for once of month Senior Citizen education classes at the local Senior Center. And, she already can be found once a month at the Pine library teaching safety in the preschool program. Her
latest addition is becoming a member of the Community Health and Resource Fair committee who are getting ready for their 2nd annual, all community, event this summer.
Stacy has been an AFBEA member for 13 years and a LAFS member for five. This year she spent countless hours preparing for our National Fire and Life Safety Characterization Conference, which she was Chair and, thankfully for us, she has agreed to stay on as Chair for 2011.
Stacy excels as a public educator and her enthusiasm for safety runs deep. She is so passionate that the hours spent on these programs are mostly uncompensated and on her own time.
Congrats again Stacy, we are so proud of you.
Chief Janet Morlock of Huachuca City, AZ
President of AFBEA
