LEARN TO BUILD WITH ROUNDWOOD
The Northern Arizona Wood Products Association (NAWPA) in partnership with Gila County, CERCA, and many more are planning on building a new 32’ x 64’ roundwood ramada to replace the existing structure at the Pine Community Center.
NAWPA is a non-profit organization that has been involved with promoting wood utilization throughout the state of Arizona. Our mission is to support sustainable Forest health and wood utilization through a diversity of wood products and community-based collaboration. One of the services NAWPA provides to its members is workshops and trainings that will help build capacity within the wood products industry. Last year, NAWPA held a hands-on workshop to teach the art of timber framing. This 2-part workshop was well received and really increased awareness regarding locally milled timbers. This year, to illustrate the use of roundwood (peeled logs), NAWPA is planning a hands-on workshop on building with roundwood. The workshop will consist of bringing a contractor in who is skilled in working with roundwood to teach step by step instruction on building with locally produced roundwood. To try out their new skills, participants will be helping to construct a 32’ x 64’ ramada in Pine, Arizona. The new ramada will be located at the community center and will replace an old structure. Not only will the local community benefit from the new ramada, but NAWPA will have a finished product to leave as a demonstration. This workshop will expose local building contractors to the use of roundwood and will teach them how to structurally build with roundwood, including the use of metal brackets. For example, many outbuildings, bridges, etc. can be built using peeled logs produced from small diameter wood. NAWPA will be working with plans that were developed by the Forest Products Lab. All the materials will be pressured at a newly constructed treatment plant in Eagar.
