Lets all dispose of our wood burning stove and fire place ashes properly
The PSFD has had at least 4 house and property fires since Nov. that were caused by ashes be disposed of improperly.
Leaving ashes and coals in any kind of container outside can still be very dangerous. With our winds around here, all it takes are a few gust to stir up some embers and you now have some hot coals. Sparks and embers, as well as small coals themselves can be whipped around and blown up against your home, or underneath your decking. Left there to smolder in the wind long enough and they catch. Next thing you know, your neighbors are reporting a fire at your house, which you've been away from for hours. Sometimes even over night. All ashes must be wet down and stirred up. They must be completely out cold before sat out in the windy conditions. They are not to be placed in wooden boxes or papersacks. Metal containers are ok, but you still have to soak them down, stir them up and really make sure they are out.
If you have questions on what to do with your ashes, please contact us, we'd be glad to give you some pointers.

Is your house fall proof? Why is this important?
Help prevent falls and injuries by correcting a few simple things in your home.
1. Throw rugs can be very dangerous. If you must have them, put them down with two sided tape. You can find this in the craft section at walmart or
store with craft/sewing sections. This will help keep your rug in place. It will help from it flipping up on itself making a catch all for your feet.
2. Keep all extension cords or any plugged in cords snug to the wall. The two sided tape is good for this too. Never stretch your plugged in items across
a walk way, even if it isn't a main walk-way, you may have to exit out an area you are not used to and could trip over these cords causing danger to
you as well as possibly more danger to your house.
3. Invest in Handles or hand rails for your bathroom and in your bedroom. Things are so much easier with that extra little handle to hang on to. Plus, in bathrooms where the possibility of having wet floors is very high, it is important to hang on to something while making your way across slick, slippery
floors. Handles meant for this purpose can be found at Ace, Home Depot, and Walmart.
Why is this important?
We respond to fall injury calls year round, where the person was stuck lying on the floor overnight because they had slipped or tripped and cause bodily harm to themselves to a point of not being able to move. Most of these could have been prevented by just tapping down their rugs, wrapping up cords, or having extra handles to hang on to for a more stable walk. If you need suggestions or help with any of these, please contact our dept. We'd love to assist you in suggestions for making your house a safer place for you to roam.
